With over 2,500 stores and a reach of almost 90% of the population across its grocery, fuel and liquor businesses, the scale of Coles Group presents both challenges and unique opportunities for the application of AI.

Since its inception in 2017, Lab288 has grown from a seedling of hope that technology and retail could be done differently to a force of disruption within a historic organisation, developing a number of novel AI systems using rich, complex datasets generated from the cacophony of the grocery store environment.

In this presentation, Andrew Nolan will detail some of the exciting projects his team is working on to tackle the biggest problems in retail. He will share what he has learned facing into legacy systems, championing modern software approaches and building out ML systems at scale.

He will be joined by Stacia Dragon who will share her experience introducing some radically different technologies to the organisation, exciting early successes in store automation, and the challenges, both technological and cultural to be surmounted in advocacy of new IT approaches centred around experimentation and continuous learning.
